People believe that observers of this fast, after death, are received by messengers from Vaikunta, abode of Vishnu and not by Yama, the god of death. Those who are not able to follow the other twenty four Ekadashi fasting in a year must observe a fast on Nirjala Ekadashi. It is believed that observing a single fast on Nirjala Ekadashi bestows the blessings and benefits of all twenty four Ekadashi fasting in a year.

When is Nirjala Ekadashi 2016? & The Legend of Nirjala Ekadashi

In the year 2016, Nirajala Ekadashi falls on 16th June. Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Pandava Bhima Ekadashi or Bhimseni or Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi or Bhima Ekadashi, based on the legend of Bhima, the second and strongest of the five Pandava brothers. Based on the story from Brahma Vaivarta Purana, it is said that Bhima wanted to keep all ekadashi fasts, but being a lover of food, he could control his hunger. His entire family of four brothers, Yudhishthir, Arjuna, Nakul and Sahadeva, along with their wife Draupadi and mother Kunti, used to observe the Ekadashi fast without fail. He was scared of dishonoring Lord Vishnu, for whom the fast is observed, hence, he approached sage Vyasa for a solution. Sage Vyasa advised Bhima to observe Nirjala Ekadashi, once a year and this way he can attain the virtue of all 24 ekadashis. As per this Nirjala ekadasi story, one is able to get the benefits of all Ekadasis by observing one Nirjala Ekadasi. Benefits – Devotees who are unable to observe all twenty fours Ekadashi fasting in a year should observe single Nirjala Ekadashi fast as  fasting on Nirjala Ekadashi brings all benefits of twenty four Ekadashi fasting in a year.

In Her satsang (spiritual discourse), Shriji told villagers how to get rid of addictions and also motivated them to be cautious against these deadly habits; many people took a solemn vow in Her presence after Her divine speech and graciousness . There seemed to be drastic changes within villagers and they wished to quit addiction from their lives such as smoking, chewing tobacco etc. Their boundless joy and satisfied eyes were the proof of what they got from Shriji’s presence as there had been no one in their village like Shriji who had visited them to know their well being. They carried the things got in charity on their heads and left for their homes with extremely contented hearts. Shriji too took the farewell from villagers by showering grace through Her sight…

Why is Shivaratri Celebrated?

Each Hindu festival is associated with many beliefs and mythologies, so is the holy day of Shivaratri. One belief says that Shivaratri is celebrated to commemorate the day when Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison, which came out during Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) Whereas, according to another belief, it is the day when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married.

Let’s know the legend of Samudra Manthan in detail.
The legend of Samudra Manthan is the reason as to why Shivaratri is celebrated. It is said that once the devas (Gods) and asuras (devils) were churning the ocean of milk. During the churning process, several things came out of the ocean. Among all those things were a pot of poison. The poison had the potential to destroy the universe, which frightened the devas (Gods) and asuras (devils). To seek help, they ran to Lord Shiva, the Lord of destruction. Lord Shiva, in order to save the universe from the deadly effect of poison, swallowed it
but held it in His throat. This act resulted in Lord Shiva’s throat turning blue, for which he earned the name ‘Nilkantha’. To celebrate this event of Lord Shiva, Shivaratri is celebrated.

Masik Shivaratri Significance For Women

Throughout the country, the occasion of Shivaratri holds prime importance for the married women as well as young girls. On this day, women observe fast and worship Lord Shiva for the welfare of their husband and sons. Unmarried girls on the other hand observe fast and pray to Lord Shiva for a right match.
