Amlaki Ekadashi Vrat katha and Mahatmay (Importance of Amlaki Ekadashi and story)
Deities had seen many types of trees before like Ashwath tree, but they were surprised after looking at this new tree and they started thinking – which tree is this, what fruit it gives and how did it originate? Then there was celestial announcement from sky.It said – Oh Deities, Lord Vishnu loves this Aamalki tree.In its roots – Lord Vishnu, on top of that – Lord Brahma and in its stem – Lord Rudra resides. In its branches – Deities and Rishis reside, in leaves – Vasu resides and in its flowers – Marudgan resides.Hence, this tree will be considered as the most holy tree.
Deities asked – Who are you, doing celestial announcement from sky? Then celestial announcement was made from sky – Oh deities, I am Lord Narayan, Lord Vishnu. This Aamalki tree which originated on earth, is a boon for human beings which destroys all the sins, will be considered as a holy tree. It’s chanting gives the fruit which is attained by donating cow.By touching it – fruit is doubled, and by eating it – fruit is tripled.Hence, human beings should consume amla.
Deities asked Lord Narayana – Oh Achyut, please tell us, by observing which fast the souls living in the mortal world will be benefited? The most kind lord said,” in falgun month , shukla paksh, pushya nakshatra dwadashi is considered to be the most auspicious date . A day before is Ekadashi and whosoever observes this fast near amla tree by awakening for the whole night , gets rid off all the sins.
Rituals ( vidhi ) and fasting method (vrat vidhi )
Deities asked Lord Vishnu”,How to observe and end this fast” . Lord said.. O’ Sages and deities, in the morning, clean your teeth with Neem stick, and take bath(in earlier times there used to be ponds or lakes to bathe) now in houses. Pray to lord Vishnu, O’ lord, I’ m observing this fast, you are the Supreme lord, you are Eternal, who will eliminate all my sins and I am totally surrendered in your lotus feet. Today, I will not eat anything, please shower your grace on me. Take amla or soil of basil tree , put it all over you body, and chant

Everywhere whether its well, river, pond, spring or lakes, bathing in every pilgrimage or temple or deity’s place, with this bath I will be getting the merit of bathing in all such pious places.
After bath, near the amla tree, purify the place under it by cleaning , place a pitcher near it and worship it. Considered as the abode of all deities, touching, eating its fruit, remembering, having darshnas of this tree is known to be very beneficial for the entire mankind. Therefore, on this ekadashi, we should worship this tree by chanting

OM VISHWAKAY NAMAH, OM VISHWARUPINEE NAMHA, OM UKRAKAYE NAMAH, OM DAMODARAY NAMAH, OM PADMANABAHAY NAMAH, SHRI VADSADHARAE NAMAH…
.If you cant remember these names, then chant OM VISHNAVE NAMAH,OM ANANATAYE NAMAH, OM ACHUTAYE NAMAH, OM GOVINDAYE NAMAH and worship this tree with kumkum, abir & gulal.

‘Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare’
‘Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare’
This is a bow with arrow. After looking at the bow and arrow, who do you remember? Lord Rama, right? After looking at the flute, you remember Lord Krishna and after looking at bow and arrow, you remember Lord Rama.
Lord Rama – Referred to as Maryada Purushottama (Lord of Self-Control)
Lord Rama – Who defeated cruel rulers and demons.
Lord Rama – The Victorious Hero.
Lord Rama – Who helps to traverse this worldly ocean.
Lord Rama – Who resides within everyone.
Mahatmay of Vijaya Ekadashi (vrat katha)
There are many definitions of Lord Rama. There are few incidents of Lord Rama’s life which inspire human beings, teach them how to live a life. When Lord Rama was residing in Panchvati along with Sita Ji; Shurpanakha, sister of Ravana, changed her appearance and came in the form of a beautiful women. She was captivated by the beauty of Lord Rama.Shurpanakha told Lord Rama – Oh brave man, Oh beautiful man, will you marry me?
Lord Rama said -Lakshmana, my younger brother, is not married yet. He might marry you!!She went near Lakshmana.Lakshmana said –He is a king. If you marry him, you can take charge of his kingdom; I am his servant, if you marry me, you will have to live like a servant. You will become a maid.Shurpanakha again went near Lord Rama.
Lord Rama refused her proposal so she got annoyed. In angriness, she took the form of a female demon. When she took the form of a female demon, Lakshmana also got angry. He thought that she is shameless and slashed her nose and ears.Shurpanakha got angry and irritated as her nose and ears were slashed and she went to meet her brother Khardushan.
Khardushan, in order to take revenge of his sister, invaded them.Uncle Maricha took the form of a golden deer, made plans to deceive Lord Rama and kidnap Sita Ji.You all know the consequence of this that Sita Ji was kidnapped by Ravana.Ravana kidnapped Sita Ji and Lord Rama wandered from one forest to another to search his beloved Sita Ji.
Lord Rama met Jatayu on the way.Jatayu narrated the whole story to him that Sita Ji was kidnapped by demon Ravana in the north direction. And to rescue her from Ravana, Jatayu fought till his last breadth. While trying to rescue Sita Ji, his feathers were slashed. Lord Rama took Jatayu and laid him on his lap.
It signifies that when you fight till your last breadth for any noble cause or for God himself; or if you fight to safeguard the religion; and if you take your last breath while fighting for it; then you get to rest in God’s lap.If one possesses the goodwill to serve God like Jatayu; safeguard religion like Jatayu; then he takes his last breath in God’s lap. Then Lord Rama killed the demon Kabandha after which he made friends with Sugriva. The army of monkeys gathered together wherein they got Hanuman Ji who was sent to cross the ocean and search Sita Ji.
“You know it –
Prabhu mudrika meli mukha maahi, jaladhi langh gaye achraja nahin
Means – It is unsurprising that you jumped over the ocean with Lord Rama’s ring in your mouth.”
When the news was confirmed that Sita Ji was kidnapped and taken at the Ashok Vatika of Ravana; Lord Rama became restless thinking about how to cross the ocean. This much army of monkeys had already gathered.Lord Rama was worried and asked Lakshmana – Sumitranandan, it is such a huge ocean; such a fearful roaring ocean; how can it be crossed with such a small army of monkeys?
Lakshmana said -Oh Lord, you are Purna-Purushottama (Supreme God). Nothing is hidden from you.At a distance of few miles from here, in the forest, there is a hermitage of Rishi Bakadalvya.Let’s go there and ask him to suggest some way out to cross this ocean.Lord Rama, in spite of being God, goes to the hermitage of Rishi; salutes him; honors and respects him by bowing his head. From Lord Rama’s life; human should learn that irrespective of how great he becomes, wealth, money, son, family, even if he attains the peak of success; even then he should humbly honor the people who are more talented than him; he should bow his head in front of holy saints.
Lord Rama goes inside the hermitage of Rishi Bakadalvya, bows his head along with Lakshmana, and asks the saint – Oh Rishi, I am son of King Dasharatha.I want to cross this ocean. Please suggest some solution for this.Rishi immediately understood thatPurna-Purushottama Lord Rama incarnated in this world to abolish the demons.
Rishi Bakadalvya says that – Rama, the ekadashi which falls on the 11th day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalgun is known as Vijaya Ekadashi.
If you observe its fast properly by following all the rituals, then definitely you can cross the ocean along with your army and will come back with great success. If you want to achieve success in your life, there are many demons in this world, ten demons of that type.
The biggest demons are sitting inside human’s mind – lust, rage, greed, attachment and fear of death. We need to overcome these demons also. And, in this world there are lots of demons, we need to overcome them also and become successful. It signifies that if human being wants to cross this worldly ocean and become successful, then he should certainly observe fast on Ekadashi.
Rituals for Vijaya Ekadashi
Now, Rishi Bakadalvya narrates the rituals to be followed while observing Ekadashi fast.On the tenth day of Krishna Paksha, Dashami, fill some water in pitcher. This is autumn season. In this season, new leaves and flowers blossom.Take these new leaves and put on the pitcher, and place idol of Lord Narayan on that.Worship that idol.
Next day, on the morning of Ekadashi, take bath in river, then place the idol of Lord Vishnu on that pitcher; worship Lord Narayan with Areca nut (supari), sandalwood, leaf, flower, fragrance.Sit in front of that and for the whole day listen to the significance of Ekadashi, do kirtan of Lord Narayan’s name; do japa; and on the next day, donate that pitcher along with the idol to any Brahmin. Dear Rama, after doing this, you will definitely achieve victory in your war.
Brahmaji told Naradji – My son, on this Vijaya Ekadashi, those who observe fast in this way; they become successful in this world and attain a superior state in the other world.Hence, you also observe fast on Vijaya Ekadashi and become victorious, successful and develop yourself.
