Once upon a time, King Mahijeet was benevolently and dutifully ruling in Mahishmati Nagari (City). People were very happy in his kingdom. Even then the king was not happy because he didn’t have any son. Once he told his people – “You are similar to my children but still I don’t have any child of my own. This fact makes me sad. I gave alms to deities and Brahmans. I never ever took money which someone else deserves.
King told his people that – “I have neither committed any sin nor did I earn wealth by injustice. I have always nurtured my people like my own children. I have followed all the rules of etiquettes. Then for which deed am I getting this punishment of not having any offspring?” After listening to this, everyone including the king’s Purohits (family priests) andwell-wishers, started looking for a solution to this. While chasing for a solution, luckily they met rishi Lomash in some forest.
Looking at the people, rishi Lomash asked them the reason for approaching. Theysaid – “Our King is very Kind. He nourished us like his own children. He is very sad due to Childlessness. Thus, it is our duty to make our king happy. Maharaja, please provide some solution through which our King can get a son.” Lomash rishi was Trikal Gyani (omniscient). He meditated for a while , saw the past of King and told them –“Your King was a Vaishya in past who used to exploit human beings, drink their blood. This Vaishya used to do business by wandering from one town to another. On the day of Jyeshtha Shukla Dashami tithi (10 th day of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month), he was thirsty and went near a lake to drink water where a calf also came along with her mother cow to drink water. But to quench his own thirst, he ignored thirst of the calf and threw the calf out of lake along with mother cow. Because of this sin, King was suffering from the pain of childlessness in this birth and due to some Punya (Good deeds) in the past, he got an empire.
Now people asked Lomash rishi – “Prabhu, you are omnipresent. Please tell us what shall we do so that our King gets a son.” Lomash rishi said – “Putrada Ekadashi of Shravana Shukla Paksha helps to get a son. One who desires a child, should duly observe fast on Putrada Ekadashi. All of you, on behalf of your king, observe fast, do Jagran (all-night vigil), do Kirtan of name of Lord Narayan. Then due to this Punya (all the good deeds done on Putrada Ekadashi), your king will get a son." People duly observed fast on Putrada Ekadashi as guided by rishi Lomash and consecrated the Punya to their King. After a few days , Queen became pregnant and gave birth to a healthy child.
That’s why, You all observe fast on all the Ekadashi’s and also motivate others to do it.

This tale is narrated in the Bhavishya Uttara Purana in the form of dialogues between Lord Krishna and king Yudhishtira.
There was a sage named Medhavi who was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. This sage used to perform deep Tapas (meditation) in the forest of Chaitraratha. This forest was full of beautiful and scented flowers. The Chaitraratha forest was also frequently visited by Indra and Apsaras. Beautiful Apsaras tried many times but could never succeed in seducing young Medhavi. One famous Apsara, “Manjughosa”, also tried many ways to seduce this sage but she could not come closer to him due to the power of his sobriety that he had attained over the years.
After many attempts Manjughosa decided to pitch a tent couple of miles away from the sage and started singing. She sang so beautifully that even the Kamdev (Cupid) got excited and decided to use Manjughosha to target Medhavi. But when Manjughosha looked at powerful and attractive body of the sage, she herself got restless by lust .She again started singing seductively, Kamdev drew Medhavi’s attention towards the charm of Manughosha through his powerful magical bows .She slowly reached closer to Medhavi and embraced him with her beautiful arms. Medhavi stopped his tapa (meditation) and got trapped in Manjughosha’s charm.
He lost his purity of mind instantaneously. He got so much attracted to her charm that he even forgot the difference between night and day.
Medhavi was charmed by her for a very long time. After living a married life for 57 years, Manjughosha lost her interest in the sage, and decided to abandon him .Tricked by apsara’s charm Medhavi couldn’t be aware of the time he spent with Manjughosha. When Manjughosha asked Medhavi to permit her to leave, now the sage got his lost senses back and realized how he was tricked by this Apsara.
Fuming with anger Medhavi cursed her to become an ugly witch.Very sad Medhavi returned back to his father Sage Chyavana’s ashram and told the whole story to his father.
Sage Chyavana asked Medhavi to observe fast on Papamochani Ekadashi, and assured him that all his sins will be removed by observing fast on this Ekadashi. Medhavi observed the fast with full devotion to Lord Vishnu and got relieved from his mistakes. Chyavana advised the same fast to Majughosha as well. Manjughosha also observed the fast and regretted for her wrong deeds and she was also relieved from her sin.

Deities had seen many types of trees before like Ashwath tree, but they were surprised after looking at this new tree and they started thinking – which tree is this, what fruit it gives and how did it originate? Then there was celestial announcement from sky.It said – Oh Deities, Lord Vishnu loves this Aamalki tree.In its roots – Lord Vishnu, on top of that – Lord Brahma and in its stem – Lord Rudra resides. In its branches – Deities and Rishis reside, in leaves – Vasu resides and in its flowers – Marudgan resides.Hence, this tree will be considered as the most holy tree.
Deities asked – Who are you, doing celestial announcement from sky? Then celestial announcement was made from sky – Oh deities, I am Lord Narayan, Lord Vishnu. This Aamalki tree which originated on earth, is a boon for human beings which destroys all the sins, will be considered as a holy tree. It’s chanting gives the fruit which is attained by donating cow.By touching it – fruit is doubled, and by eating it – fruit is tripled.Hence, human beings should consume amla.

A day before is Ekadashi and whosoever observes this fast near amla tree by awakening for the whole night , gets rid off all the sins.
Rituals ( vidhi ) and fasting method (vrat vidhi )
Deities asked Lord Vishnu”,How to observe and end this fast” . Lord said.. O’ Sages and deities, in the morning, clean your teeth with Neem stick, and take bath(in earlier times there used to be ponds or lakes to bathe) now in houses. Pray to lord Vishnu, O’ lord, I’ m observing this fast, you are the Supreme lord, you are Eternal, who will eliminate all my sins and I am totally surrendered in your lotus feet. Today, I will not eat anything, please shower your grace on me. Take amla or soil of basil tree , put it all over you body, and chant
Ashwakrante Rathrante Vishnu krante vasundhare
Bhutike har main paapam janmkotyaam samarjitam
O’ Goddess earth, countless horses and chariots run over you. Lord Vishnu in ‘Vamana’ incarnation had covered you in a single step, I have been purifying myself by bathing with your soil, kindly get me rid off from all the sins, worries and distress.
Then put the soil over your body and bathe. There is a mantra for bathing too. I will tell you the meaning of that mantra. While bathing, do pray to the goddess of water, O’ Goddess of water, you are the life line of all the creatures on the earth, you feed all types of creatures. Everywhere whether its well, river, pond, spring or lakes, bathing in every pilgrimage or temple or deity’s place, with this bath I will be getting the merit of bathing in all such pious places.
After bath, near the amla tree, purify the place under it by cleaning , place a pitcher near it and worship it. Considered as the abode of all deities, touching, eating its fruit, remembering, having darshnas of this tree is known to be very beneficial for the entire mankind. Therefore, on this ekadashi, we should worship this tree by chanting

OM VISHWAKAY NAMAH, OM VISHWARUPINEE NAMHA, OM UKRAKAYE NAMAH, OM DAMODARAY NAMAH, OM PADMANABAHAY NAMAH, SHRI VADSADHARAE NAMAH…
.If you cant remember these names, then chant OM VISHNAVE NAMAH,OM ANANATAYE NAMAH, OM ACHUTAYE NAMAH, OM GOVINDAYE NAMAH and worship this tree with kumkum, abir & gulal.
OFFER SALUTATION TO Amla tree by chanting’ Om vishnave namah, om govindaye namah’ and lit a diya ,do aarti and imagine you are personally worshipping the Lord. After this say, “dhoopam darshyami, deepam darshyami”..after that do 28 or 108 circumambulation(pradakshina) of this tree .
